The Shibari series consists of more traditional, even archaic vessels. For, as the title suggests to a more or less informed public, this Japanese term means “to bind”.
In so doing, Morgane Tschiember shows herself to be at least three times iconoclastic. Firstly, with regard to traditional ceramics, whether utilitarian or luxury. Secondly, with regard to a very old ritual and martial art of retaliation, which has more recently evolved into an erotic art – kinbaku or Japanese bondage – but also, and finally, with regard to the Jômon era (10000-300 BC), again Japanese, which is characterized not only by its “corded decorations or designs” but also designates the end of the so-called Paleolithic pre-ceramic period.
